| Protecting stored cereals against the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) remains a key challenge in stored-product entomology. Biodegradable packaging has emerged as a sustainable strategy for postharvest pest management. This study developed active edible films from gelatin and whey protein isolate with Cuminum cyminum essential oil nanoemulsions at 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5% w/w via ultrasound. The films were fabricated via solution casting and thoroughly characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as mechanical and barrier property tests. Insecticidal bioassays included fumigant toxicity, repellency, larval penetration tests, and enzymatic assays for glutathione S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. DLS analysis revealed that the nanoemulsion at 0.25% concentration exhibited a mean droplet size of 47.94 nm with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.230, indicating a stable and relatively monodisperse system. SEM micrographs confirmed the uniform distribution of nanoemulsion droplets within the film matrix. Increasing the nanoemulsion concentration significantly improved the tensile strength (TS) from 18.0 to 20.1 MPa and reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP) from 0.98 to 0.85 × 10-10 g.m-1.s-1 Pa-1. The film containing 0.5% nanoemulsion exhibited the highest fumigant toxicity against larvae, with an LC50 value of 0.559 µL L-1 air. The repellency index (RI) for larvae reached 87% at the 0.25% concentration. Furthermore, the 0.25% cumin nanoemulsion resulted in the absence of normal GST activity in all tested insects and significantly reduced AChE activity, suggesting a dual disruptive effect on the insect's detoxification and neural systems. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that active edible films loaded with C. cyminum nanoemulsions exhibited favorable mechanical strength and moisture-barrier properties, together with repellency (up to 87%) and fumigant activity (up to 92.8% mortality), as well as enzyme-inhibitory effects against S. oryzae. Therefore, they offer a promising, sustainable, and eco-friendly alternative for integrated pest management (IPM) of stored-grain pests. | ||
