| Water scarcity and increasing environmental pressures have made irrigation management a critical determinant of sustainability in semi-arid agricultural systems. This study quantitatively compared the environmental impacts of potato production under furrow and sprinkler irrigation in the Kuzaran region of Kermanshah Province, western Iran, during the 2023–2024 growing season using a life cycle assessment (LCA) framework in accordance with ISO 14040/44. The functional unit was one ton of potato, with complementary results reported per hectare. System boundaries encompassed on-farm operations from land preparation to harvest, including fertilizers, organic amendments, pesticides, irrigation water, fuel, electricity, machinery, and labor. Environmental impacts were assessed using the CML baseline method across global warming, acidification, eutrophication, abiotic depletion of fossil fuels, human toxicity, and aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicity categories. Sprinkler irrigation consistently resulted in lower environmental impacts than furrow irrigation across all impact categories and functional units. On a product basis, global warming potential decreased from 301.87 to 186.39 kg CO₂ eq t-1 (38%), while abiotic depletion of fossil fuels declined from 2,909.13 to 1,683.63 MJ t-1. Acidification and eutrophication potentials decreased from 6.54 to 3.95 kg SO2 eq t-1 and from 3.47 to 2.14 kg PO43- eq t-1, respectively. Human toxicity declined from 44.34 to 28.72 kg 1,4-dichlorobenzene eq t-1. On a per-hectare basis, global warming potential was also lower under sprinkler irrigation (8,946.89 vs. 10,112.84 kg CO2 eq ha-1). The lower environmental burdens were primarily associated with higher yield, reduced irrigation water abstraction, lower energy demand, and improved nutrient-use efficiency. These findings indicate that irrigation efficiency can simultaneously reduce water use, energy consumption, nutrient losses, and emission intensity, highlighting sprinkler irrigation as a promising strategy for improving the environmental sustainability of potato production in semi-arid regions. | ||
