| چکیده | ||
| Zataria multiflora Boiss. is an important medicinal plant native to Iran, valued for its bioactive compounds and tolerance to environmental stresses. This study aimed to investigate the interactive effects of drought stress and plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and photosynthetic traits in different ecotypes of Z. multiflora. A three-factor factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three replications, including ecotype (Isfahan, Kerman, Darab, Jahrom, and Khorramabad), drought stress levels (100, 75, and 50% field capacity), and PGPR treatments (control, Arthrobacter sp., and Curtobacterium sp.). Drought stress significantly reduced fresh and dry shoot biomass across all ecotypes, while PGPR inoculation alleviated biomass reduction at all stress levels, with Curtobacterium sp. showing the strongest growth-promoting effect under non-stress conditions. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents increased with increasing drought intensity in all ecotypes, whereas PGPR enhanced their accumulation under non-stress conditions but generally reduced these compounds under drought stress. Antioxidant activity and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters varied depending on ecotype and PGPR strain. Drought stress decreased chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll contents, while PGPR application increased chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll and mitigated drought-induced damage. Carotenoid content increased under drought stress in most ecotypes. Overall, the results demonstrate that PGPR application, in a genotype- and stress-dependent manner, represents a sustainable biological approach for improving growth, maintaining photosynthetic efficiency, and enhancing drought tolerance in Z. multiflora. | ||
